Arrests Made in Bauchi for Illegal Tree Cutting

Bauchi Authorities Detain Four for Tree Felling

The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), in collaboration with the police, has arrested four individuals for illegal tree felling in Nahuta village along the Darazo-Bauchi Federal highway. The arrests occurred during a routine surveillance by BASEPA’s Director General, Dr. Mahmud Bose, who noticed the suspects using a chainsaw to cut down trees for timber production.

Upon investigation, the leader of the group admitted to purchasing the tree from a local vendor, acknowledging the illegality of their actions. The suspects have been taken into police custody and are awaiting prosecution.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of illegal tree felling in Bauchi State. In previous years, BASEPA has conducted similar operations, including the arrest of 23 individuals in 2020 for illegal tree felling and the confiscation of 600 bags of charcoal.
