Travel Alert: Australia Urges Citizens to Avoid Nigeria – Expert Insights

The Australian Government has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to the volatile security situation, including threats of terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and civil unrest.

The advisory specifies that Australians should avoid travel to the following states: Adamawa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Federal Capital Territory (excluding Abuja), Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

Potential targets for attacks include places where crowds gather, such as hotels, bars, restaurants, political meetings, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, sporting events, transport hubs, law enforcement facilities, international organizations, and camps for displaced people.

Australians in Nigeria are advised to exercise heightened caution, avoid intercity travel by road and rail due to the high incidence of criminal and terrorist attacks, and consider professional security advice and support if travel within Nigeria is necessary.
