First Woman in 16 Years to Win Best African Act

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has made history at the 2025 MOBO Awards, held in Newcastle, United Kingdom, by winning both the Best African Music Act and Best International Act categories. She is the first woman in 16 years to receive the Best African Music Act award and the first African female artist to secure the Best International Act honor.

Ayra Starr’s unique blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and pop has propelled her to international acclaim. Her sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21, released in 2024, earned her two Grammy nominations and featured performances at prestigious festivals like Glastonbury. She is also set to support British pop-rock band Coldplay on their upcoming stadium tour.

The 2025 MOBO Awards celebrated various artists across multiple categories. British rapper Bashy won Best Hip-Hop Act and Album of the Year for Being Poor Is Expensive. Darkoo secured Best Female Act and Song of the Year for “Favourite Girl” featuring Dess Dior. Odeal was recognized as Best Newcomer and Best R&B/Soul Act. Central Cee received the Best Male Act award, tying with Stormzy as the most-decorated rapper in the event’s history, each holding seven awards.

The event also honored Denise Lewis with the Paving the Way award and Vybz Kartel with the Impact award. Performances from artists such as Nova Twins and Krept and Konan highlighted the ceremony, which is scheduled to air on BBC One on February 21.
