Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has firmly defended his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, asserting that he cannot be threatened and stands by his comments.
In a recent interview, Governor Mohammed emphasized that his remarks were made in good faith, aiming to highlight potential adverse effects of the tax reforms on sub-national governments and the populace.
The Governor expressed concerns that the proposed tax bills could impoverish sub-national entities and threaten their survival.
He urged the Presidency to adopt a more inclusive approach, listen to the concerns of the people, and avoid any semblance of arrogance or impunity in policy implementation.
Governor Mohammed’s stance comes in response to the Presidency’s call for him to retract his statements, which it described as “inflammatory rhetoric” and “direct threats toward the federal government.”
The Governor, however, maintains that his intentions are to foster dialogue and advocate for policies that protect the interests of ordinary Nigerians, particularly those in economically disadvantaged states.
This development underscores the ongoing debate and differing perspectives on the proposed tax reforms, highlighting the need for constructive engagement between federal and state governments to ensure policies are equitable and considerate of all regions.
