Bill to Remove Immunity for VP and Governors Advances

Second Reading: Bill to Lift Immunity for VP and Governors

On March 26, 2025, the Nigerian House of Representatives advanced a bill to its second reading that seeks to remove the constitutional immunity currently granted to the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies. This legislative move aims to enhance accountability, curb corruption, and eradicate impunity in public office.

The bill is part of a broader constitutional amendment process, with a total of 42 amendment bills progressing through second reading on the same day. Notable among these is a proposal to separate the offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and State Attorneys-General from the roles of Minister of Justice and State Commissioners for Justice, respectively. Additionally, there are bills advocating for the creation of new states, including Ijebu, Ife-Ijesa, Tiga, Orlu, and Etiti.

The proposed removal of immunity would subject these high-ranking officials to legal proceedings during their tenure, a significant shift from the current constitutional provisions that shield them from prosecution while in office. Proponents argue that this change is essential for promoting transparency and accountability within the government.

It’s important to note that this bill is still in the legislative process and must undergo further readings and approvals before becoming law.
