On January 4, 2025, a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Aboga, along the Igwuruta-Etche road in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m., resulted in injuries to seven construction workers present at the site.
Eyewitnesses reported that while some workers managed to escape as the building began to collapse, others were trapped under the debris.
Rescue operations were promptly initiated by local residents, officials from the Rivers State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Ministry of Special Duties, and the Ikwerre Local Government Authority.
Equipment such as excavators, fire trucks, and ambulances were deployed to aid in the rescue efforts.
Evans Bipi, the Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, visited the scene and attributed the collapse to the use of substandard building materials by the developer.
He noted that this incident marks the fourth building collapse in the state within the past three months.
