Nigerian troops have arrested four suspected members of the Ambazonian rebel group from Cameroon in Taraba State. The arrests were made by the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), at a hotel in Takum Local Government Area on December 18, 2024, following credible intelligence.
The suspects were reportedly involved in exchanging arms for cocoa with Nigerian collaborators. Additionally, troops recovered 30 stolen pipeline parts in Wukari Local Government Area, indicating a broader network of illicit activities.
The Ambazonian rebels are separatists from Cameroon’s English-speaking regions, seeking independence from the predominantly French-speaking country. Their activities have occasionally spilled over into Nigerian territory, posing security challenges.
The Nigerian Army’s operation underscores its commitment to securing border areas and preventing foreign insurgent groups from establishing a foothold within Nigeria.
The arrested individuals are expected to undergo further investigation to uncover the extent of their operations and affiliations.
This incident highlights the ongoing security concerns in the border regions between Nigeria and Cameroon, necessitating continued vigilance and cooperation between the two nations to address cross-border insurgency and criminal activities.
