In a recent operation in Sokoto State’s Gudu Local Government Area, troops from the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Brigade engaged in a firefight with Lakurawa terrorists, resulting in the deaths of six terrorists and five soldiers.
The Lakurawa group, which emerged around 2016 or 2017 in Sokoto State, initially presented itself as a self-defense force against bandit attacks. Over time, the group became increasingly radical and oppressive, imposing strict religious laws and exerting control over local communities.
By 2023, Lakurawa had become a significant threat, raising taxes, attacking security forces, and killing civilians. In November 2024, Nigerian authorities officially designated the militia as a terrorist group.
