On Sunday, March 2, 2025, gunmen abducted Catholic priest Rev. Father Philip Ekeli and seminarian Peter Andrew from St. Peter Catholic Church in Ivukwa, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State. The assailants forcefully entered the church around 11:30 p.m., leading to the abduction.
In response, the Edo State Police Command initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators. During the operation, one suspect was killed, and four others were arrested. The police are collaborating with local communities to locate and rescue the victims.
The Catholic Diocese of Auchi expressed deep concern over the recurring abductions of clergy members in the region, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures to protect religious personnel.
