The Nigerian Senate recently had a rowdy session over President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bill, which was unexpectedly introduced for debate despite not being listed on the day’s Order Paper.
The introduction of the bill led to a heated exchange among senators. Senator Ali Ndume, a strong critic of the bill, raised concerns about procedural irregularities, arguing that it should not be debated without proper inclusion in the agenda.
He emphasized the importance of following legislative procedures, especially for such a significant issue that affects the public.
However, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele pushed for the inclusion of experts, including the Director-General of the Debt Management Office and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, to provide insights.
This sparked further division, with Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau dismissing Ndume’s concerns, which led to even more tension.
While the bill, which aims to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system, is seen as crucial for economic stability, it has faced significant opposition from various stakeholders.
The session underscored the divisions within the Senate over how to handle the bill’s deliberation.
