Ibadan Stampede Case: School Principal, Radio Proprietor, and Ooni’s Ex-Wife Naomi Sent to Agodi Correctional Centre

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of three individuals at the Agodi Correctional Centre in connection with the tragic stampede that occurred during a children’s Christmas funfair on December 18, 2024, resulting in the deaths of 35 minors.

The individuals remanded are:

• Prophetess Naomi Silekunola: Former wife of the Ooni of Ife and a key organizer of the event through her foundation, WINGS (Women In Need of Guidance and Support).
• Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat: Proprietor of Agidigbo FM, a prominent radio station in Ibadan that publicized the event.
• Fasasi Abdullahi: Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, where the event took place.

The defendants face a four-count charge, including conspiracy, causing death by negligence, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.

The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi, did not take their pleas due to lack of jurisdiction and ordered their remand pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The stampede occurred during a children’s Christmas party organized by WINGS Foundation and media partners Agidigbo FM at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The event, intended to bring joy to children, ended in tragedy with 35 minors confirmed dead and six others critically injured.

The case has been adjourned until January 13, 2025, for further mention.

This incident has raised concerns about the organization and safety measures at large public events, especially those involving children.

Authorities emphasize the need for adequate security and medical facilities to prevent such tragedies in the future.
