Nigerian singer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, remains in police custody despite a Federal High Court order for his release.
On December 23, 2024, Justice Liman directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to either charge Speed Darlington in court or release him unconditionally within 48 hours.
As of December 26, 2024, the police have not complied with this order. Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju criticized the continued detention, stating, “The Nigerian police have refused to release Speed Darlington despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court to do so.”
Speed Darlington’s legal troubles began in October 2024 when he was arrested over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking involving fellow artist Burna Boy.
Although he was initially released on bail, he was re-arrested on November 27, 2024, during a performance in Owerri, Imo State.
The court’s recent order aimed to address concerns over his prolonged detention without formal charges. However, the police’s non-compliance has raised questions about adherence to judicial directives and the rule of law.
As of now, Speed Darlington remains in detention, and his legal team continues to advocate for his immediate release in accordance with the court’s mandate.
