‘Basic Instinct’ Actor Denis Arndt Has Died

​Denis Arndt, the esteemed actor renowned for his role in “Basic Instinct,” passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, at his cabin home in Ashland, Oregon, at the age of 86.

Born on February 23, 1939, in Issaquah, Washington, Arndt’s life was marked by diverse accomplishments. He served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, earning two Purple Hearts and a Commendation Medal. Following his military service, he piloted helicopters in Alaska before pursuing higher education at the University of Washington.

Arndt’s acting career began in Seattle, leading to multiple seasons with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a foundational role at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre. His transition to film and television included notable appearances in “The Wonder Years,” “L.A. Law,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” In “Basic Instinct” (1992), he portrayed Lieutenant Phillip Walker, delivering a memorable interrogation scene with Sharon Stone’s character.

In 2016, Arndt made his Broadway debut at 77 in Simon Stephens’s play “Heisenberg,” starring alongside Mary-Louise Parker. His performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play in 2017.

Beyond acting, Arndt was passionate about sailing, often navigating the San Juan Islands. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Magee Downey, seven children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family remembers him for his wit, charm, and dedication to his craft, encouraging others to “grab life by the balls and follow your passion.”
