A recent diphtheria outbreak at King’s College in Lagos has resulted in the death of a 12-year-old Junior Secondary School (JSS) student. The student presented symptoms including a sore throat and fever on February 22 and was subsequently admitted to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where he received appropriate medical care but sadly passed away.
Following this incident, 34 individuals identified as close contacts were placed under observation, with 14 exhibiting symptoms consistent with diphtheria. These individuals were also admitted to LUTH and are undergoing treatment. Health authorities have activated an Emergency Response Committee and are implementing mass vaccination campaigns targeting students and staff to prevent further spread.
Parents have expressed concerns over the school’s handling of the outbreak, citing unsanitary conditions and delayed responses. In response, the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with federal health agencies, is enhancing infection prevention and control measures at the school and has disseminated information on diphtheria symptoms and prevention to healthcare facilities statewide.
