Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested and transported to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity related to his administration’s controversial war on drugs. Upon arriving at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Hong Kong, Duterte was apprehended by Philippine authorities acting on an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Duterte’s daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, criticized the arrest as improper and politically motivated.
Despite the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2019, the ICC has proceeded with its investigation into alleged mass killings during Duterte’s tenure, covering incidents from November 2011 to March 2019.
The arrest has elicited mixed reactions, with victims’ families expressing relief and advocates viewing it as a step toward justice, while supporters question the ICC’s jurisdiction over actions taken before the country’s withdrawal.
