The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has firmly rejected allegations from Niger Republic that accuse Nigeria of sponsoring terrorism.
In a recent statement, ECOWAS emphasized Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to regional peace and security, highlighting its leadership in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and its support for various countries across the African continent.
The regional bloc stated, “ECOWAS therefore refutes any suggestion that such a generous and magnanimous country would become a state-sponsor of terrorism.”
These allegations from Niger have emerged amid heightened tensions following the military coup in July 2023, which led to strained relations between Niger and neighboring countries, including Nigeria.
Despite these challenges, Nigeria has continued to engage in diplomatic efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger and maintain regional stability.
ECOWAS’s dismissal of Niger’s claims underscores the organization’s support for Nigeria and its recognition of the country’s role in combating terrorism within the region.
The bloc’s statement serves to reinforce Nigeria’s reputation as a key player in promoting peace and security across West Africa.
