On March 28, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, Edo State, where 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria were killed by a mob after being falsely accused of kidnapping. Reports indicate that the victims were innocent hunters who were misidentified, leading to their deaths.
The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for justice and urging residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He stated that such acts of jungle justice are unacceptable and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
In response to the incident, the Edo State Police Command has arrested four individuals suspected of involvement in the mob action. The police have reiterated their commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly and ensuring that all those responsible are held accountable.
Additionally, political figures such as Rabiu Kwankwaso have expressed concern over the killings. Kwankwaso highlighted the importance of ensuring that all Nigerians can travel without fear of harassment or intimidation and called for measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
