EFCC Arraigns Bankers in Enugu: Details on Alleged Currency Racketeering

Currency Racketeering Scandal: Enugu Bankers Face EFCC Charges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned several bankers in Enugu for their alleged involvement in currency racketeering.

The accused individuals were brought before a Federal High Court in Enugu following investigations into their activities, which reportedly involved the illegal trading of the Nigerian currency, particularly the naira.

The EFCC alleges that the bankers exploited their positions to hoard and sell cash at exorbitant rates during the recent cash scarcity, violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act and anti-corruption laws.

The commission further noted that their actions contributed to the hardship faced by Nigerians during the period.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the court subsequently granted them bail with strict conditions. The judge ordered an accelerated hearing of the case to ensure timely justice.

This development underscores the EFCC’s intensified efforts to clamp down on economic crimes and restore transparency in the financial sector.

The commission reiterated its commitment to tackling practices that undermine Nigeria’s monetary policies and disrupt the economy.
