The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Catherine Ijeoma Ugwu before the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri on charges related to a romance scam totaling ₦6.8 million. Ugwu is accused of impersonating the fiancée of the petitioner, Emmanuel Ani, and fraudulently obtaining funds under this pretense.
The charges against Ugwu include obtaining by false pretense, criminal misappropriation, and cheating by impersonation. Specifically, between June 2023 and August 2024, she allegedly deceived Ani into transferring ₦6,710,300 into her bank account, claiming the funds were for the upkeep of his purported fiancée, one Miss Chinansa—a claim the prosecution asserts she knew to be false.
Upon arraignment, Ugwu pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecution requested a trial date and that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility. Justice Aisha Kumaliya granted this request, scheduling the trial to commence on April 8, 2025, and ordering Ugwu’s remand until that date.
