The Ekiti State Police Command has imposed a ban on protests and “illegal” gatherings across the state.
This action comes ahead of a planned demonstration by activists seeking the release of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, who is facing legal proceedings on allegations of defamation against Senior Advocate of Nigeria Afe Babalola.
Farotimi’s controversial book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, has led to his ongoing trial, with a bail hearing scheduled for December 10, 2024.
The police, citing intelligence reports, expressed concerns that protests could be hijacked by individuals with intentions to cause violence.
They emphasized the need to maintain public peace, warning against any violation of the directive. Additionally, a ban has been placed on the sale and use of fireworks during the festive season, citing potential security risks and public disturbances.
