Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a United Kingdom prison and has returned to Nigeria. She arrived in the country on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and is currently in Abuja.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was sentenced to four years and six months in prison by a UK court in May 2023, following her conviction alongside her husband and Dr. Obinna Obeta for conspiring to exploit a young man for his kidney. The organ was intended for the couple’s daughter.
Her return has sparked jubilation in her hometown of Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State. The President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Benjamin Chijioke, described her return as a significant relief for the community and expressed hope for the eventual release of Senator Ekweremadu.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu remains incarcerated in the UK, serving a nine-year and eight-month sentence related to the same case.
