Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has stirred discussions about gender-based violence (GBV) with his progressive views on equality in relationships.
He stated that he teaches his daughters not to accept abuse in marriage and has encouraged them to defend themselves if they are physically assaulted by their husbands.
Sanusi highlighted this stance during a public discussion, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect in relationships and condemning violence against women.
The emir further illustrated his commitment to such principles by sharing a story about his daughter Shaheeda, who once slapped a boy in school for persistently disrespecting her and other girls.
Sanusi supported her action, seeing it as a stand against abuse, and noted that his children are even more radical and fearless in addressing issues of inequality and injustice than he is.
