Man in Enugu Faces Remand for Violent Assault on Wife
On January 31, 2025, Sunday Echeji was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu State, accused of severing his wife’s hand in a brutal act of domestic violence. The incident occurred in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area, and has sparked widespread outrage across the state.
Echeji faces charges of attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024. Due to the severity of the charges, the Chief Magistrate Court transferred the case to the State Department of Public Prosecution, citing lack of jurisdiction. Echeji has been remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Centre pending his trial at the State High Court.
The Enugu State Government, led by First Lady Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has condemned the act and reaffirmed its commitment to ending violence against women. In a statement, the First Lady emphasized that such violence will not be tolerated and assured that justice will be served.
