An ex-convict, John Agbontean, was arrested by the Edo State Police Command for attempting to rob the Restoration Gospel Ministry in Benin City on December 22, 2024, just two days after his release from Oko Prison.
Agbontean, aged 35, was apprehended with a cut-to-size gun during the attempted robbery. He confessed to conspiring with an accomplice, identified only as Ola, who managed to escape arrest. The duo targeted the church’s end-of-year harvest thanksgiving proceeds.
The arrest followed a distress call reporting the robbery, prompting operatives from Saint Saviour Divisional Headquarters to respond swiftly.
The Edo State Police Command emphasized that crime does not pay, highlighting Agbontean’s swift return to criminal activity post-incarceration.
