FCCPC Investigates MultiChoice Price Increase in Nigeria

MultiChoice Faces FCCPC Inquiry on DStv, GOtv Pricing

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer to an investigative hearing on February 27, 2025, regarding the company’s planned subscription price increase for its DStv and GOtv services, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

The FCCPC expressed concerns over recurrent unilateral price hikes, potential market dominance abuse, and perceived anti-competitive practices in the pay-TV industry. The commission emphasized its commitment to ensuring fair competition and consumer protection within Nigeria’s broadcasting and digital subscription landscape.

MultiChoice Nigeria announced the price adjustments, citing increased operational costs. Under the new pricing structure, the DStv Premium package will rise to ₦44,500, Compact+ to ₦30,000, and Compact to ₦19,000. GOtv’s Supa Plus package will now cost ₦16,800, with other plans also seeing significant adjustments.

The FCCPC has warned that should MultiChoice fail to provide satisfactory explanations or be found in violation of fair market principles, the commission may impose regulatory penalties, sanctions, or other corrective measures to protect Nigerian consumers.

This development follows a similar price hike implemented by MultiChoice in May 2024, which the company attributed to inflation and rising operational costs in the country.
