FCT Scavengers and Beggars Take Legal Action Against Nyesom Wike Over Arrests

Nyesom Wike Sued for N500m by FCT Scavengers: Legal Battle Over Arrests

A group of vulnerable residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including scavengers, beggars, and petty traders, have filed a lawsuit against the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, seeking ₦500 million in damages.

The suit alleges that directives issued by Wike led to arbitrary arrests, detention without charges, harassment, and extortion of homeless individuals and other vulnerable groups in Abuja.

The applicants argue that these actions violate their fundamental rights as guaranteed under Sections 34, 35, 41, and 42 of the Nigerian Constitution.

They are requesting the court to declare that the treatment they received constitutes inhumane and degrading treatment, and are seeking an order for the respondents to issue a public apology. Additionally, they demand the implementation of policies and reforms to protect the rights of vulnerable Nigerians residing in the FCT.

This legal action follows a directive issued by Minister Wike on October 22, 2024, which led to the formation of a joint task force comprising security operatives and enforcement officers.

The task force conducted operations resulting in the arrest of individuals perceived as homeless, scavengers, and beggars. The applicants contend that such actions are unconstitutional and have caused significant distress among the affected populations.
