In response to recent U.S. policy changes affecting global health aid, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria has approved ₦4.8 billion for the procurement of 150,000 HIV treatment packs. This initiative aims to ensure continuous care for individuals living with HIV in Nigeria.
The U.S. policy shift stems from an executive order issued on January 20, 2025, which mandates a 90-day pause on all U.S. foreign assistance, including programs under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This pause has raised concerns about potential disruptions in HIV treatment services globally.
Nigeria has been a significant beneficiary of PEPFAR, receiving substantial support for its HIV/AIDS programs. The recent U.S. policy shift has prompted the Nigerian government to bolster domestic funding to mitigate potential gaps in treatment and care.
The approved funds will be utilized to procure treatment packs, ensuring that individuals currently receiving care continue to have access to essential medications. This move underscores Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, despite uncertainties in international aid.
