Following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the embattled governor has addressed the public, urging calm and adherence to the law.
In his statement, Fubara emphasized his administration’s commitment to constitutional order and the rule of law, highlighting efforts to maintain peace and progress in the state. He noted that, despite political disagreements, his government continued to function effectively, ensuring the security of lives and property, timely payment of salaries, and the execution of significant projects.
Addressing the current situation, Fubara called on the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful and law-abiding. He assured citizens that engagements with relevant institutions are underway to uphold democracy and ensure the state’s continued prosperity.
The political crisis in Rivers State has been escalating, with tensions between Governor Fubara and state lawmakers leading to attempts to impeach him over alleged illegal budget presentations and issues concerning the composition of the legislative chamber. These developments, coupled with recent incidents of pipeline vandalism, prompted the President’s decision to declare a state of emergency.
In response to the declaration, military personnel and equipment have been deployed to the Rivers State Government House to maintain order during this period.
