A recent report by the Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Group asserts that suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was wrongly implicated in security issues leading to the state’s declaration of emergency rule.
The coalition’s investigation found no evidence linking Governor Fubara to militant activities or pipeline vandalism. Instead, the report suggests that the allegations were politically motivated, stemming from power struggles and rivalries within the state’s political landscape.
The report also highlights the role of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike in escalating tensions in Rivers State through inflammatory remarks.
In response to the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu, which suspended Governor Fubara and other elected officials for six months, the Nigerian Bar Association criticized the move as illegal, stating that an emergency declaration does not automatically dissolve or suspend elected state governments.
