A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan, Oyo State, resulting in the deaths of several children due to a stampede.
The event, organized by the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, aimed to host up to 5,000 children, offering prizes such as scholarships.
In response to the tragedy, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde announced that the event organizers have been arrested and that an investigation is underway to determine the causes of the stampede.
Governor Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is a very sad day. We sympathize with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths.”
Emergency services have been deployed to provide assistance to the victims, and injured children have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The governor assured the public that anyone directly or indirectly involved in the disaster would be held accountable and urged residents to remain calm as security agencies investigate the unfortunate incident.
