Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has raised concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, stating that only Lagos and Rivers states would benefit significantly from the reforms.
During an interview, Zulum explained that northern governors conducted analyses and concluded that the changes would be detrimental to their region, potentially increasing poverty and hardship.
The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has therefore urged a delay to allow for deeper consultations and adjustments to the bills.
The tax reforms, which include bills on VAT and income tax restructuring, aim to boost Nigeria’s revenue.
However, critics from the north argue that the proposals disproportionately favor wealthier states like Lagos and Rivers, further marginalizing less affluent regions.
Despite these objections, the bills recently passed a second reading in the National Assembly.
