Greenland Military Base Leader Fired After VP’s Visit

US Government Dismisses Greenland Military Base Chief

The U.S. Department of Defense has relieved Colonel Susan Meyers of her command at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, citing a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.” This action follows an internal email she sent to base personnel, distancing the base from Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks during his March 28 visit. In her message, Meyers emphasized that the concerns expressed by the Vice President did not reflect the views of the base, aiming to reassure the multinational staff, including Danish and Greenlandic personnel.

Vice President Vance’s visit was part of the Trump administration’s renewed interest in Greenland, with discussions about potential U.S. acquisition resurfacing. During his visit, Vance suggested that Greenland could benefit from being under the U.S. security umbrella, a stance that sparked controversy and diplomatic tensions with Denmark.

The Pentagon’s decision to remove Colonel Meyers underscores the administration’s expectation that military leaders align with its policy positions. A Pentagon spokesperson stated that actions undermining the President’s agenda would not be tolerated, highlighting the importance of maintaining a unified stance among military leadership.

This incident adds to a series of high-profile dismissals within the U.S. military and defense establishments, reflecting the administration’s broader efforts to ensure that officials adhere to its directives and policy objectives. The situation also brings attention to the sensitive geopolitical dynamics in the Arctic region, particularly concerning U.S. relations with Denmark and Greenland’s autonomy.
