In a distressing incident in Ondo State, Nigeria, Reverend Canon Olowolagba, an Anglican priest, was abducted alongside his wife and two children on December 22, 2024. The family was traveling along the Ise Akoko-Iboropa road in Akoko North-East Local Government Area when they were kidnapped.
The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦75 million for their release.
After negotiations, the amount was reportedly reduced to ₦15 million.
Fortunately, the family regained their freedom on December 28, 2024. The Ondo State Security Network, known as Amotekun, confirmed their release, though details regarding the payment of ransom remain undisclosed.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria, particularly targeting clergy members and their families. The Church of Nigeria has previously called for police reforms to address such security challenges.
The safe return of Reverend Olowolagba and his family brings relief to the community, but it also underscores the need for enhanced security measures to protect citizens from such threats.
