Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Resigns as Tinubu's Political Adviser

Tinubu’s Adviser Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Steps Down

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who served as the Special Adviser on Political Matters in the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima, has resigned from his position. Sources within the presidency confirm that Baba-Ahmed submitted his resignation approximately two weeks ago, citing personal reasons. As of now, it is unclear whether President Bola Tinubu has formally accepted the resignation.

Appointed in September 2023, Baba-Ahmed, a former spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), played an active role in representing the presidency at various public engagements during his 17-month tenure. His departure follows that of Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, who stepped down in September 2024 for personal health reasons.

Baba-Ahmed’s tenure was not without controversy. In April 2024, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, criticized northern appointees, including Baba-Ahmed, for perceived silence amid criticisms of the administration. Baba-Ahmed responded by suggesting that Matawalle should focus on highlighting the achievements of northern appointees rather than attacking the NEF.

Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s resignation adds to the list of significant departures from President Tinubu’s administration, reflecting ongoing shifts within the Nigerian political landscape.
