Health Update: Pope Francis Faces Respiratory Challenges

Pope Francis Experiences Two Respiratory Failures

Pope Francis, aged 88, has experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure due to significant mucus accumulation in his airways, leading to bronchospasm. This necessitated two bronchoscopies to remove the secretions. He is currently on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, though he remains alert and cooperative. The prognosis remains guarded.

The Pope has been hospitalized since February 14 for double pneumonia. His condition has fluctuated, with recent complications raising concerns.

Supporters have gathered outside Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to pray for his recovery. The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis will not lead the annual Ash Wednesday service on March 5.
