Abuja Violence: Security Forces Engage Shiite Protesters

​On Friday, March 28, 2025, a violent confrontation occurred between members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, and security operatives in Abuja. The clash took place during the IMN’s annual Quds procession near Banex Plaza in Wuse 2, resulting in heavy gunfire and multiple casualties.

The Quds procession, held globally on the last Friday of Ramadan, is organized by the IMN to express solidarity with Palestine and protest Israeli occupation. This year’s demonstration saw participants waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine.” Tensions escalated when some protesters reportedly began throwing stones at security operatives, prompting the officers to fire shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

According to reports, the clash resulted in the death of a security operative and left several others injured. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the arrest of 19 suspects in connection with the incident. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with gunfire erupting as security forces attempted to prevent the procession.

The IMN has condemned the security forces’ response, describing it as an “abuse of power” and alleging that as many as five protesters may have been killed, though these figures remain unverified. The FCT Police Command has stated that investigations are ongoing to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice and has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

This incident underscores the longstanding tensions between the IMN and Nigerian security forces, highlighting the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution to prevent further violence.​
