A group of unidentified herdsmen reportedly invaded and destroyed a five-hectare rice plantation in Ilupeju Ibaro Village, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident occurred on January 28, 2025, when the herdsmen, accompanied by a large number of cows, caused extensive damage to the crops.
The farm owner, Mr. Okegbenro Julius, reported the incident to the Ilupeju Division of the Ogun State Police Command. A security guard employed on the farm documented the incident via video recording as evidence. Upon realizing that they were being observed, the herdsmen fled the scene, taking most of their cows with them; however, one cow was detained in the process.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, directed the Divisional Police Officer to convene an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders, including community leaders and representatives from both the farming and herding communities.
This initiative aims to prevent potential conflicts and foster understanding between the two groups. The police have also assured residents of the state’s commitment to ensuring peace and safety for all citizens.
