“I dont want to be sent back to Nigeria” journalist who fled to UK “after claiming he was being targeted by Nigerian authorities” cries out as he faces deportation

A Nigerian journalist, facing deportation from the UK, has expressed his fear of returning to Nigeria, claiming he fled due to persecution by Nigerian authorities.

The journalist, whose identity has not been fully disclosed for safety reasons, sought asylum in the UK after being targeted in Nigeria for his critical reporting on government corruption and misconduct.

This case is not isolated, as many journalists in Nigeria have faced harassment, arrest, and even physical attacks, particularly during protests and periods of political unrest.

Despite fleeing for safety, many exiled journalists, like this individual, continue to face challenges in countries of refuge, including the UK, where the asylum system can be harsh and often skeptical of their claims.

Those who fail to secure asylum risk deportation, a situation that can place them in grave danger upon their return to countries with poor press freedom records, like Nigeria, where journalists are frequently targeted by authorities and extremist groups

The journalist’s plea highlights the difficult situation many exiled media professionals face, seeking international protection while fearing for their lives if forced to return.
