IGP Launches Investigation into Stampede Tragedies in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja

Police Probe Ordered by IGP After Fatal Stampedes for Free Items in Three Cities

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has ordered investigations into recent stampede incidents in Ibadan, Oyo State; Okija, Anambra State; and Abuja, which have resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries.

In Ibadan, a tragic event at a funfair on December 18, 2024, led to the deaths of at least 35 children, with many others critically injured.

Similarly, in Okija, Anambra State, a stampede during a palliative distribution by the Obijackson Foundation resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

In Abuja, a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama during a food distribution event claimed at least 10 lives and left several others injured.

The IGP emphasized that negligence on the part of organizers of such events is a criminal offense punishable under the law.

He has mandated the Commissioners of Police in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations into these incidents for further legal actions.

Additionally, the IGP warned against unorganized distributions of palliatives and relief materials, highlighting the dangers posed to public safety during these events.

He urged organizers to implement proper crowd control measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also called for proper crowd management during charity events to prevent such occurrences.

President Bola Tinubu has canceled all official engagements in Lagos to honor the victims of these tragic incidents.

He urged state and local authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures to prevent future occurrences.
