IGP Withdraws Invitation to Sanusi Over Eid Killing

IGP Cancels Sanusi’s Invitation Following Eid Killing

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has withdrawn the invitation previously extended to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning the violent incident during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations on March 30, 2025, which resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to several others.

Initially, the police had invited Emir Sanusi to Abuja for questioning regarding the events that led to the disturbance. However, following consultations with respected stakeholders and to prevent any misinterpretation of police actions, the IGP decided to rescind the invitation. Instead, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been directed to proceed to Kano to obtain the Emir’s statement.

Prior to the Sallah celebrations, credible intelligence indicated that both Emir Sanusi and his rival, Aminu Ado Bayero, planned to hold separate Durbar festivals, a traditional procession involving horse riding. To avert potential clashes, the IGP deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Abubakar Sadiq to engage with both parties and the Kano State Government. An agreement was reached that no Durbar festivals would be held, and neither Emir would partake in horse riding during the celebrations.

Despite this agreement, Emir Sanusi attended the Eid prayers by car but later mounted a horse for a procession, accompanied by local vigilantes. This action allegedly provoked confrontations with community youths, leading to the tragic death of Usman Sagiru and injuries to others.

The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, ensuring that all individuals found culpable are brought to justice. Several arrests have already been made in connection with the case.
