Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun visited Ilorin, Kwara State, to express condolences to the family of 35-year-old Jimoh Abdulquadri, who reportedly died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.
Abdulquadri, a resident of the Balogun Fulani community, was arrested on December 19, 2024, over an alleged debt of ₦220,000 owed to a colleague. He was found dead the following day, with family members alleging he was tortured, citing injuries and blood on his body.
During his visit, IGP Egbetokun assured the community of a thorough investigation, stating, “Justice must be served. I have already directed an investigation… We will get to the root of this case.”
He urged the community to remain calm and await the investigation’s outcome, emphasizing that the findings would be made public.
The IGP also pledged support to the bereaved family, acknowledging that while no support can fully alleviate their pain, efforts would be made to assist them.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident and has initiated a discreet investigation to ascertain the cause of death, promising that “no stone will be left unturned.”
Community leaders, including the Balogun Fulani and the Ilorin Descendants Union, have called for justice for Abdulquadri.
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, expressed shock over the incident and urged security agencies to adhere strictly to professional and ethical standards in their interactions with the public.
