Ita-Giwa: Senators Are Immune to Sexual Harassment

The Debate on Sexual Harassment in Politics: Ita-Giwa’s View

Florence Ita-Giwa, a former Nigerian senator, has commented on recent sexual harassment allegations within the Senate, suggesting that female senators should not claim such harassment, as it portrays weakness. She believes that once women become senators, they should present themselves as strong and unapproachable to avoid such situations.

Ita-Giwa further stated that accusing someone of sexual harassment at the Senate level is a sign of weakness and makes one unapproachable. She emphasized that female senators should see themselves as equals to their male counterparts and not allow such issues to arise.

These remarks come in response to allegations by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of making sexual advances towards her. Ita-Giwa clarified that she does not doubt Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims but believes that discussing sexual harassment in the Senate is inappropriate and undermines a woman’s strength.
