Ex-Husband Allegedly Sets House Ablaze: Italy-Based Nigerian Businesswoman’s Close Call

A 54-year-old Italy-based Nigerian businesswoman, Tina Uyi, narrowly escaped death on New Year’s Day when her estranged ex-husband, 55-year-old Osaro Ahunwan, allegedly set her apartment ablaze in Idumwonwina, near Oluku, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Tina had returned to Nigeria on December 31, 2024, to celebrate the New Year with her family. In the early hours of January 1, 2025, Osaro reportedly arrived at her residence, demanding entry.

Upon Tina’s refusal—citing their separation and the return of her bride price in April 2024—Osaro allegedly threatened to burn down the apartment with its occupants inside.

Despite Tina’s pleas, Osaro is accused of breaking the windows, dousing the apartment with petrol, and setting it on fire.

The blaze quickly engulfed the building, but neighbors intervened, rescuing Tina’s elderly parents, both in their nineties. Tina sustained third-degree burns and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Benin City.

The fire destroyed property worth millions, including cash in both local and foreign currencies, as well as packages from Italy intended for loved ones in Nigeria. Firefighters from the Edo State Fire Service managed to extinguish the flames after significant damage had been done.

Authorities have arrested Osaro and Tina’s elder brother, Odaro Oviarobo, in connection with the incident.

During interrogation, Osaro allegedly confessed that Odaro had provided him with detailed information about Tina’s return to Nigeria, reportedly in exchange for ₦5,000. Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
