Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is under investigation for her alleged involvement in the release and repatriation of Osama Almasri, a Libyan military figure wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The investigation, led by Prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, also includes Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, and Cabinet Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano. They are suspected of aiding and abetting a crime and embezzlement.

Almasri was arrested in Turin on January 19, 2025, based on an ICC warrant. However, he was released two days later due to alleged procedural errors and was subsequently flown back to Libya on an Italian secret service jet, where he received a hero’s welcome. This action has drawn criticism from opposition politicians and human rights organizations, who suggest that the Italian government’s decision may be linked to its reliance on Libyan authorities to curb immigration.

Prime Minister Meloni has defended her government’s actions, attributing Almasri’s release to formal errors in the arrest request and suggesting that the investigation is politically motivated. She has expressed defiance against what she perceives as attempts to intimidate her administration.

The ICC has demanded an explanation from the Italian government regarding the circumstances of Almasri’s release. The situation has intensified scrutiny of Italy’s judicial processes and its relationships with Libyan militias, especially concerning agreements aimed at controlling migrant flows from Libya to Italy.
