Former Super Eagles captain Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has fired back at former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher over his remarks that downplayed the prestige of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Carragher had suggested that playing for Egypt and competing in AFCON could limit Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or by not being part of a “major” tournament.
Okocha, however, dismissed Carragher’s comments as a display of narrow-mindedness. In a video shared on social media, he stated, “There are some players that will say some things. You just overlook them. I mean, you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher. So, he can never appreciate African football or the talents that come out of it.”
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel also joined in, condemning Carragher’s remarks as disrespectful to one of Africa’s most important football competitions.
