Rapper Jay-Z has accused attorney Tony Buzbee of attempting to blackmail him through unfounded allegations. In December 2024, a lawsuit was filed accusing Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party. Jay-Z vehemently denied these claims, describing them as “frivolous, fictitious, and appalling,” and asserted that Buzbee’s actions were a blatant blackmail attempt. He stated, “My lawyer received a blackmail attempt, called a demand letter, from a ‘lawyer’ named Tony Buzbee.”
Jay-Z’s legal team highlighted inconsistencies in the accuser’s story, leading to the voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit with prejudice on February 14, 2025, preventing any future refiling. Jay-Z expressed relief, noting the trauma the allegations caused his family, and criticized Buzbee’s approach as a “money grab” lacking credible evidence.
Additionally, Jay-Z revealed that Buzbee had previously attempted to extort money from him over another false allegation involving a male accuser. His legal team viewed Buzbee’s letters as blatant blackmail attempts, with Jay-Z alleging that Buzbee demanded “something of substance” to settle the claims.
