In his upcoming book, FIGHT: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, journalist Jonathan Allen reveals that former President Barack Obama privately expressed doubts about Vice President Kamala Harris’s viability as the Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
Obama reportedly advocated for an open convention to select a nominee, believing Harris was not the strongest candidate to secure a victory. He initially refrained from endorsing her, only offering public support five days after Biden’s exit.
This hesitation was mirrored by other Democratic leaders. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Bill Clinton also delayed their endorsements, reflecting broader concerns within the party about Harris’s electability.
Despite these reservations, Harris secured the nomination but ultimately lost the election to Donald Trump. The internal debates and delayed endorsements highlighted in Allen’s book underscore the challenges Harris faced within her own party during the 2024 campaign.
