In a disturbing incident in Kano, Nigeria, a man named Shafi’u Abubakar has been remanded in custody following a tragic mosque fire that resulted in the deaths of 14 people.
The fire occurred on May 15, 2024, during the dawn prayer (subhi) when Abubakar allegedly used petrol to ignite the mosque while worshippers were inside.
He reportedly locked the doors to prevent escape, leading to severe injuries for several individuals, many of whom were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Abubakar has been charged with multiple offenses, including mischief by fire, causing grievous hurt, and culpable homicide.
During court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to all charges. The judge has ordered that he receive legal representation, as he did not have a lawyer during the initial hearing.
The case has been adjourned until May 31, 2024, for further proceedings.
