On March 3, 2025, gunmen abducted Rev. Fr. Philip Ekeli and seminarian Peter Andrew from St. Peter Catholic Church in Iviukha, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
After nine days in captivity, Rev. Fr. Ekeli was rescued by police in Amughe community on March 13. Tragically, Peter Andrew was killed during the rescue operation, though his body has not been recovered.
The incident has drawn attention to the increasing insecurity in Nigeria, particularly affecting religious figures. The Catholic Church has expressed deep concern over the safety of its clergy and seminarians amid such threats.
