Lagos Building Collapse: Two Dead, 14 Rescued

Tragedy in Lagos: Building Collapse Claims Two Lives

On March 5, 2025, a two-story building under construction on Oriwu Street in the Lekki area of Lagos State collapsed around 4:00 PM. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Police Command, swiftly initiated search and rescue operations.

Fourteen individuals were rescued from the debris and transported to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment. Tragically, two individuals were confirmed dead at the scene.

The victims were laborers working at the construction site. The cause of the collapse has not been immediately determined, and investigations are underway to ascertain the factors leading to the incident.

Building collapses have been a recurring concern in Lagos State. Notably, in November 2021, a high-rise building in the Ikoyi area collapsed, resulting in at least 42 fatalities.

In March 2019, a three-story building in the Ita Faaji area collapsed, killing 20 people.

These incidents have prompted the Lagos State government to initiate investigations and implement measures aimed at improving construction standards and regulatory oversight to prevent future occurrences.
